1. So a few days ago, I wrote on Facebook that I wasn’t checking for local emcees like I used to and it may have come off pretentious but there’s more to it than that. I know quite a few dope emcees in Philly but I’ve been so distanced from rap as of late that I don’t care to invest the time into it like I used to. My backpack era is over. Buying mixtapes on 52nd street in the early 2000s meant a lot to me as a rap fan but now, there’s nothing. I mean there some rappers from here that are popular who’s music bores me (SNORE!) but I’m not going out of my way to make that known. Those artists have fans that support them and my opinion won’t sway their feelings and vice versa. For example, I have a homie that’s an artist who has an affiliation with Philly’s most well known Hip-Hop collective and he, for some strange reason, decided to post a video of why the lead emcee in the group wasn’t on his Top 5 list of greatest rappers. Amongst friends, we can have that conversation but on the world wide web, you’re going to look like a hater (and a few individuals close to the emcee in question let my guy know that!) even if you’re just giving an opinion. Somethings are best held to the chest and not publicized. Continue reading

1. First, as a Hip-Hop fan, I have to start this off by giving a 21 Gun salute to Prodigy of Mobb Deep. He passed away yesterday at the age of 42 due to complications from Sickle Cell Anemia. Prodigy reminded me of my older cousin Ted which is probably why I was even more of a fan back in the day. Prodigy had one of the nicest pens in rap and without a doubt was one of New York’s most influential emcees. 1995’s The Infamous album introduced me to how ill he and Havoc were on joints like “Shook Ones Pt. II”, “Temperature’s Rising” and “Give Up The Goods” then came Hell on Earth the following year with “G.O.D. Part III” and the alleged Pac diss “Drop A Gem On Em”. Somedays I feel like 1999’s Murda Muzik could be my favorite Mobb Deep album but it’s a tough decision to make. And as a solo artist, he proved that he could still be a formidable force with one of the illest tracks “Keep It Thoro” and it’s memorable intro: “Oh y’all n***as killers now, oh word?”. His follow up projects like Return of the Mac, Bumpy Johnson, and Albert Einstein with Alchemist kept my attention as a fan while other emcees from the golden era fell off. Summerjam screen or not, you could never front on him. Rest in Peace, P! Continue reading

1. Sometimes being an asshole makes me uncomfortable. It’s not that I have a problem with exerting my power when it’s necessary but I hate creating weird energy but at times it’s very necessary. There are people out there that are full of shit and you can’t let them under your skin but I do advocate strategically getting under theirs. Continue reading

1. I often hear that “race relations” are getting better in this country but there are constant reminders that say otherwise. Lebron James, an all-star basketball player who’s become quite the humanitarian, had his home defaced with the word NIGGER. It’s 2017 and idiots are still showing how much of a dickhead they can be with their actions. As a Black man in America,  I’m very aware that the game is rigged and more often than not the scales won’t tilt in my favor but there’s an undying optimism that’s been passed on from generation to generation and I’d be lame to entertain the hatred instead coming from a place of love. With that said, Lebron has to shut Golden State down without mercy in this year’s NBA Finals. Continue reading

1. I’d like to thank the members of N.E.R.D. for my new found mantra (and future tattoo): Fly Or Die. Fly Or Die is the title of their sophomore album which had a significant presence in my collegiate life. While reading Charlemagne’s newest book Black Privilege it hit me out of nowhere. In this world it’s fly or die. Either you do or you don’t. Continue reading

1. A very dope 1993 Dennis Rodman write up in Sports Illustrated “Demolition Man“.

2. Over the Memorial Day Weekend, I watched a series on Netflix titled The Keepers and every episode baffled me. I heard about it via a friend on Facebook and I decided to give it a watch. I initially thought that it would focus on a nun’s disappearance but it went deeper in the corruption of Baltimore’s archdiocese. I binged watched all 7 episodes and there wasn’t a dull moment. Check it out! Continue reading

1. Live, Suffer, then Celebrate. If you want to be better then you have to go through fire of some kind. There’s no progress with the accumulation of bumps and bruises. Being at my lowest in life has brought me to many of my highest points and provided me with fantastic survival tactics to handle whatever will be thrown my direction. Fear not! negatives can bring forth life altering positives. Continue reading

1. Kendrick’s DAMN. album is a masterpiece although I prefer To Pimp A Butterfly to this one in terms of production but content wise this album is jamming. I had little to no expectations for this album which made the experience way better. With every album, his writing improves. My favorite tracks – thus far – are “YAH”, “FEEL.” “XXX.” and “GOD”. 1. The art of conversation has been lost on our generation. We (not me but y’all!) don’t know how to talk to each other any more and it’s wack. Communication is very undervalued these days which explains why there’s so much interpersonal fuckery. People have to read more and use twitter and Instagram less. I may elaborate on this with a future vlog but we have to do better. And to all the guys trying to catch the attention of woman of substance, everything that comes out of your mouthpiece has got to be flawless and if not flawless, let it be as earnest as possible. 1. For a few days, after my grandfather passed I found myself pondering a few things about life. Not about death or where you go after you die, but more so about the life that I’m living now. My grandfather was a great man in my eyes and no one on this earth could tell me any different. What I’ve heard about his years as a young man and what I’ve seen in my 32 plus years with him as my grandfather made me place it all in perspective. You have to live a life worth living. Wake up everyday with a purpose of some sort but most importantly, be courageous and confident. He was loved and respected and I should be so fortunate to leave a legacy on that level. BTW… His prom photos were LEGENDARY… he had like 8 pictures each with a different girl. RIP Grandpop.  Continue reading
