Summer Reading: Barack Obama & Michelle Obama “Farewell Speeches”

“Don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered.”Michelle Obama

I make no bones in saying that I’m not a huge fan of this country’s current administration. I may not discuss political issues that much but I’m well aware that we are in a state of discord. Reading the Farewell Speeches by the former President and First lady was refreshing to say the least; their words reminded me that even in the darkness caused by the Trump administration, there’s still light at the end of the tunnel but ONLY if we want it to be. The eight years preceding whatever the hell this is may not have been perfect but I never felt more proud to be an American than I did during that time. The Obama administration ran on a campaign of change and hope which inspired many of us to dream of living in a better place. Barack said, “But laws alone won’t be enough. Hearts must change. It won’t change overnight. Social attitudes oftentimes take generations to change”. Time is our greatest asset and as the years pass, I hope that we are able to get a better handle on the way that we treat each other as citizens and most importantly as people. We don’t have to be friends but that doesn’t mean that we have to be enemies.
